Nairobi’s punk rock trio Powerslide , debuted their EP on bandcamp over the weekend. A few days later they made it available on local music distribution site, Mookh.
With this strategic release, Powerslide look keen on shoring up support for their new material in anticipation for their more definitive body of work. The EP features fan favorites Cheshire Grin (Turn that Shit Up) and Serpents in Your Heart. Their most recent release Monsters and Men that features Lord Spikeheart on vocals is also on the billing.
Mookh’s platform offers direct payment via Mpesa . Apart from giving the option for gifting promo codes the mobile payment option is the most attractive feature especially in a country like Kenya where card usage isn’t widespread. The initial step right through to checkout and payment are simple and straightforward. Once you input your phone number, you get a prompt on your phone and you can go ahead and make your payment.
Powerslide have also taken advantage of Mookh Music’s promo code option, offering discounts to bearers, a move that is certain to draw some loyalty points with their first customers.
Regrettably, Mookh Music’s stream/play function isn’t functional, a fact that may turn away prospective customers wanting to sample the band’s music first. There are no integrations with platforms like Soundcloud, BandCamp or YouTube either. This is a critical oversight that the administrators will be keen to look into if the platform is to be effective.
Titled “This is Africa”, the name coincides with this weekend’s rock music festival “This is Africa Festival”. The event is scheduled to feature a variety of sounds with bits of alternative, hardcore, punk and progressive music. The trio of Qreed, Sam and Willy will share the stage at Choices’ basement with New York’s Alternative Hardcore group “Stray from the Path” together with Kenya’s Crystal Axis and Murfy’s fLaw. They will also be joined on stage by Germany’s AYS. Powerslide’s balls to the wall performances have drawn mixed reactions from crowds, but fans of punk rock recognise their appeal. That’s a night I wouldn’t miss.
Advance tickets are available from the event page.
